Idea #15: Why Do You Follow Me on Twitter?

Build a web app which would:

  • provide for authentication via Twitter OAuth
  • show the logged-in user their following list and allow them to annotate why they follow someone
  • provide a search (preferably live) to find a particular person in their following list if they want to annotate a particular person
  • provide a public discovery search / browse which is based on the notes others have made

This actually benefits everyone involved…you can remember why you followed someone, the person who was followed can better understand why you are following, and the general public can use this information to better decide why they might like to follow someone.

Update: Geoff (@gtcaz) adds this bit to the idea in a private message to me: “Totally. How met. Who introduced. Context.”

Ok, so who’s going to build this?  :)

Known Implementations: None

Brilliant. Literally 20 minutes ago I was thinking I was wishing there were a field in Tweetie that allowed me to write a note as to why I followed a certain person. Please build it so I can use it.

sometimes, not always tho…actually RARELY but you know… i will follow someone, then first message to them will be related to why im following them.

perhaps a starting point would be the first message to a new follower or followed?

or perhaps its just a query of the top words sent in tweets between to users… excluding the obvious “if the you me i are” type words, you might find the context that way?

I think what Geoff meant by context is just that at the moment of follow, you jot down a note as to why. And perhaps (if there was a way), you might note who introduced you to a person or from whom you found out about a person.
